Smart home devices are in demand. The U.S. smart home market is expected to reach $52 billion by 2027, or about 94 million users, according to Statista. A study by Home Innovation Research Labs found that a vast majority of homebuyers are familiar with the technology, such as smart thermostats (82%) and smart appliances (75%).
To help meet this demand and better position themselves in the market, 75% of builders are providing the infrastructure for these devices in their homes. Builders who don’t embrace smart technology will miss out on a large and growing potential market.
Smart natural gas fireplaces burn brighter
Natural gas fireplaces have long been a popular feature in new homes. Buyers appreciate the comfort and convenience of a cozy natural fire without all the hassle and mess associated with traditional wood fireplaces.
While natural gas fireplaces have always been easy to turn on and off, today's buyers want the added convenience of smart device control. Smart gas fireplaces can deliver that added convenience. Models that are Wi-Fi enabled and use a mobile app are now available, allowing users to control and monitor the fireplace from anywhere using a smartphone or voice assistant.
Some natural gas fireplace units can also be integrated with a centralized home automation system, which may require special wiring to the wall switch. Standalone apps are also available that are compatible with most fireplace models. A Wi-Fi module is typically required.
Some fireplace apps also offer thermostat control in addition to on/off control. A thermostat controls a gas fireplace by monitoring the room temperature and adjusting the fireplace’s heat output as needed.
Benefits for buyers and builders
Adding smart features to a natural gas fireplace is a win-win. Homebuyers will enjoy the comfort and ambiance a natural gas fireplace brings, in addition to these other benefits:
- Safety. There are no ashes or flying sparks, reducing the risk of injury to children and pets.
- Energy savings. Smart controls improve efficiency, lowering heating costs.
- Air quality. No fumes or particles are released into the home.
- Convenience. There is no need to haul or store fresh firewood.
You'll also be able to sell your homes at a premium. According to Redfin, homes with natural gas fireplaces sold for 13% more than the national median price. Homes with smart controls will also sell faster.
